July 7, 2009
-- Adopting Simpana Software's Unified Platform for Backup, Recovery & Archive for Microsoft Exchange Improves Data Reliability and Availability while Reducing Mailbox Sizes and Storage Costs--

OCEANPORT, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jul. 7, 2009-- CommVault (NASDAQ: CVLT):

News Facts

  • Having been ranked among the top 10 foreign military sales contractors, top 50 Navy contractors and top 100 defense contractors in the nation, VSE Corporation has deployed CommVault® Simpana® software to provide its clients with top-notch service and support by protecting highly sensitive project data.
  • To reinforce its compliance and best practice requirements by retaining crucial emails and file data for longer periods and also improve overall mailbox management, VSE has selected Simpana Archive software. According to the company, CommVault’s archiving capabilities will provide greater flexibility to retain email for whatever time period best meets corporate policies while also achieving projected reductions of up to 40 percent in mailbox sizes.
  • VSE will also implement Simpana Search software to handle search and discovery requests in-house. VSE expects to reduce its risk and cost related to discovery requests for Electronically Stored Information (ESI) by using Simpana software eDiscovery capabilities.
  • VSE’s IT staff of 30 oversees a state-of-the-art environment for approximately 2,200 employees, supporting a full complement of Dell servers, laptops and desktops along with Microsoft Office, SQL Server, SharePoint as well as the Adobe creative suite of applications.

Simpana Software Fixes Broken Backups & Controls Rapid Email Growth

  • With CommVault’s holistic approach to data management, VSE leverages enterprise-class capabilities, including backup, recovery and archive, from a centralized management console. According to VSE, automated, policy-driven operation enables the company to backup twice as much data in the allocated four hour backups; restores take minutes instead of hours or days. Now only one person monitors email alerts and status updates, driving major administrative efficiencies while lowering management costs.
  • VSE switched to CommVault Simpana software from Symantec Veritas Backup Exec when both incremental and full backups couldn’t be completed within the company’s allotted windows. According to VSE, a dedicated three-person team baby-sat full backups, which often failed and took up to four days to complete. Meanwhile, VSE was challenged by increasing compliance requirements coupled with the need to manage growing volumes of Microsoft Exchange data.
  • VSE purchased the Simpana Archive module to control email growth and save a significant amount of disk capacity by reducing the size of primary data stores. Archived emails are being moved to secondary, less expensive SATA storage to maximize VSE’s IT budget. The company also will be able to identify, collect and preserve critical data as part of business best practices.

Content Indexing & Deduplication Simplify Search and Discovery

  • VSE is using Simpana software’s content indexing and deduplication to streamline eDiscovery while storing more data on less disk. Content indexing supports universal search of archived email messages and attachments; CommVault’s deduplication feature eliminates duplicate copies of files and attachments in backups and archives stored on disk.
  • By deploying Simpana Search and eDiscovery capabilities, VSE expects to be able to realize substantial cost savings by meeting discovery requests for Electronically Stored Information (ESI) across both backup and archived data in-house.
